Cultural Diversity: The Unifying Force of Indonesia
Indonesia is a country rich in natural beauty and culture. Within this nation, there are more than 100 cultures that reflect the customs, arts, and achievements of a particular nation, society, or social group. However, at times, we still witness a lack of appreciation and love for Indonesian culture itself. This is an important concern that needs to be discussed.
For example, have you ever heard the song "Rasa Sayange" in the show Upin & Ipin? That song is an Indonesian regional song, not a Malaysian regional song as many people may think. Why does such confusion occur? It indicates that there are still many Indonesians who have not fully embraced and loved their own culture. As the saying goes, "you can't love what you don't know," to love Indonesian culture, we must first get to know and appreciate it.
Furthermore, let's talk about acceptance of cultural diversity in Indonesia. Have we truly accepted these differences? In reality, in our small circles, we often engage in petty disputes due to differences in opinions. We also often grant privileges to one group or establish cultural standards accepted by society. For example, in a viral TikTok video, there was a dance performed by people from Madura using the sound "aduh kacung bernah sengak," which received mockery and bullying from some netizens. This is very hurtful to the Madurese people who are proud of their culture. Netizens should realize that such actions can hurt others. The happiness in practicing their culture should not be made into a subject of mockery.
In essence, there are still many Indonesians who laugh at the cultures of other regions within the country. However, when our culture is claimed by another country, we become angry. As a diverse nation, we must understand that cultural differences are a treasure that should be valued. As stated in the Qur'an, "Mankind is one community" (Al-Baqarah: 213). Let us not allow differences to divide us. The concept of Bhineka Tunggal Ika in Indonesia's national motto implies that we can be different yet still be one.
So, why did God create diversity? Doesn't difference lead to conflict? My friends, it is precisely these differences that have made Indonesia the strong country it is today. As expressed by Kyai Sholeh Bahruddin, the founder of Pondok Pesantren Ngalah Pasuruan, Indonesia would not be Indonesia without Confucianism, Catholicism, Christianity, and other differences. From this diversity, we can have various ways of approaching problems and complementing each other. This makes Indonesia a harmonious and blessed nation.
Cultural diversity is a valuable asset for Indonesia. While other countries may have only one or two types of culture, Indonesia has a multitude of captivating cultural variations. As young people, we have an important task to promote a campaign for cultural diversity that will strengthen our nation. Let us not think that this is difficult to achieve. Start with simple steps, such as changing our own mindset to accept and embrace the diverse cultural traditions of various ethnic groups in Indonesia.
